Even Father Christmas needs careful tax planning

Few people operate on a truly global scale, but Father Christmas is one of them.

Based in Lapland, travelling internationally, and carrying out activities in almost every jurisdiction in the world, his tax position would be anything but straightforward. Residency alone would require careful consideration, before even touching on where income arises and how it should be reported.

Anyone whose work crosses borders knows that tax stops being simple very quickly. Different countries take different views on residency, source of income and reporting obligations. Deadlines vary. Rules overlap. What looks compliant in one place can create exposure somewhere else.

Santa’s work is also highly seasonal. A concentrated period of intense activity followed by quieter months brings its own challenges, particularly around cashflow planning and the timing of tax liabilities. That combination of international reach and uneven income is where problems most often arise.

At Davenports, we see these issues regularly. Not with reindeer and sleighs, but with directors, consultants and business owners whose work no longer fits neatly within one country or one tax system.

Residency, international income and record keeping are usually where complexity begins. When activities cross borders, tax becomes strategic rather than administrative.

Even Father Christmas would need strong records. Workshop costs, staff wages, transport, maintenance and supplies all need to be tracked properly. Some expenses will be allowable, others will not, and assumptions are rarely enough when multiple jurisdictions are involved.

As the year draws to a close, his focus will soon shift from global travel to making sure everything is in order before taking a well-earned rest.
