Student Loan Repayment Advice, Bury Manchester

Student loan repayments are often taken automatically through payroll, but that does not always mean the figures are correct. The amount you repay depends on your repayment plan, your income and whether you are employed, self-employed, a company director or complete a Self Assessment tax return.

At Davenports, we help you understand what you should be repaying, check deductions already made and make sure your student loan position is correctly reflected in your tax return and payroll records. We can also help identify overpayments, incorrect plan information and situations where deductions continue after a loan has been cleared.

What is Covered in Our Student Loan Repayment Service?

We can help identify which repayment plan applies to you, including Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4, Plan 5 and Postgraduate Loan arrangements. Getting the plan right matters because each plan has its own income threshold and repayment rules.

For employees, we can review payslips and PAYE deductions to check that student loan repayments are being taken using the correct plan. If you also complete a Self Assessment tax return, we can make sure the repayments already deducted through PAYE are correctly reflected so you are not charged again because figures were omitted or entered incorrectly.

For self-employed clients and directors, we can calculate the student loan amount due through Self Assessment and explain how different types of income can affect the calculation. Where relevant, this can include salary, self-employed profits, property income and certain unearned income reported through Self Assessment.

We can also review situations where deductions appear to have continued after a loan was cleared, check discrepancies between HMRC and Student Loans Company records and help you understand whether an overpayment refund may be available.

    What Our Clients Say

    Get in touch today….

If your student loan deductions do not look right, or you simply want to understand what you should be paying, our team can review your position and explain the next steps clearly.

    Let's Begin

    Common Student Loan Repayment Problems

Student loan issues often appear when information is split between payroll, HMRC, the Student Loans Company and Self Assessment. One common problem is an incorrect repayment plan being used by an employer, which can result in the wrong amount being deducted from salary.

People who are both employed and required to submit a tax return can also become confused when PAYE deductions and Self Assessment interact. Your PAYE repayments should be taken into account when your Self Assessment position is calculated, so the figures need to be entered accurately.

Directors and people with additional income can face further complexity because some income outside salary may be relevant when student loan repayments are calculated through Self Assessment. We can review the complete picture rather than looking at payroll in isolation.

We can also help where deductions continue close to or after final repayment, or where HMRC and Student Loans Company records do not appear to agree.

Why Choose Davenports for Student Loan Advice?

Student loan repayments sit alongside PAYE and Self Assessment, so it makes sense to review them as part of your wider tax position. At Davenports, we can look at your payslips, tax return and other income together rather than treating the student loan calculation as a separate issue.

We support employees, sole traders and company directors and explain the rules in straightforward language. If something looks wrong, we can identify where the issue is likely to have arisen and help you understand the appropriate route for correcting it.

Our aim is simple: to help make sure you are repaying the amount required under your plan without avoidable errors, duplicated figures or unnecessary overpayments.

    FAQs

How do I know which student loan repayment plan I am on?

Your repayment plan depends on when and where you studied and the type of loan you took out. Current UK repayment arrangements include Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5 as well as Postgraduate Loans. We can help you identify the correct plan from your records and check that payroll is using the right one.

Can I repay a student loan through PAYE and Self Assessment?

Yes. If you are employed, repayments may be deducted through PAYE, while Self Assessment can calculate any further amount due based on your total relevant income. PAYE deductions already made should be included on your tax return so they are taken into account in the final calculation.

Do dividends affect student loan repayments?

They can in some Self Assessment cases. Certain unearned income can be included when student loan repayments are calculated if the relevant conditions are met. This can be particularly important for company directors who receive a mixture of salary and dividends.

What happens if I am on the wrong repayment plan?

Using the wrong plan can mean too much or too little is deducted from your pay. We can review your payslips and loan details, identify the likely problem and help you understand what needs to be corrected with HMRC, your employer or the Student Loans Company.

Can I get a refund if I have overpaid my student loan?

A refund may be possible in some circumstances, for example where deductions were taken when your annual income was below the relevant threshold or where payments continued unnecessarily. Eligibility depends on the reason for the overpayment, so we can help review the figures before you make a claim.

Can Davenports check my student loan deductions?

Yes. Send us your recent payslips, student loan information and, where relevant, your Self Assessment records. We can review the deductions, explain what plan and rules apply and identify anything that needs further investigation.

    Check Your Student Loan Repayments

Book a student loan repayment review or send us your latest payslip and relevant HMRC or Student Loans Company information. We can check the figures, explain what is happening and help you understand any action that may be needed.
